A big part of sustainable aquaculture is figuring out how to manage fish waste. The Sowers Lab has developed a system that converts fish waste into biogas. Biogas is a kind of fuel produced from the decomposition of organic waste.
- Fish poop is collected from the bottom of the fish tank
- A drum with a screen filter removes the solids from the water
- The solids are stored in a settling tank then fed to the bioreactor
- The bioreactor has bacteria called methanogens that convert the solids to biogas
- The biogas is collected in a tank until it is ready to be used
- The biogas is burned to provide heat or fed to a generator to produce electricity that is used to produce more fish
