Faculty Positions

Assistant Professor:  Biofilms
Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology

The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) of the University System of Maryland seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) taking modern “omic” (transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic) approaches to the study of biofilms in the environment and/or of significance to pathogenicity. The successful candidate will have a track-record of outstanding research of basic biological processes involved in biofilm establishment, maintenance, and control. Candidates with an interest in practical and biomedical application of their fundamental research, including interactions with industry, are encouraged to apply. Candidates should also be interested in utilizing state-of-the-art techniques for biofilm analyses that will translate into environmental and/or human health applications.

A demonstrated ability to establish a well-funded research program in a dynamic and very collaborative setting is expected of the successful candidate. Primary appointment is in the Dept. of Microbial Pathogenesis, School of Dentistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore, with a secondary appointment at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. The primary focus of the appointee will be research; teaching at the graduate level is also strongly encouraged. Candidates should explicitly outline the links of their research to human health and/or environmental applications.

IMET’s mission is to study the biology of coastal marine biosystems and ensure their sustainable use, as well as exploit marine-derived systems to improve human health (www.imet.usmd.edu). IMET is a collaboration of three major USM research institutions - the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) - in an integrated state-of-the-art research facility located at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related fields. Postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record are expected. Staff Positions

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician
The Columbus Center

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has an opening for an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician at The Columbus Center’s Aquaculture Research Center located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.  The incumbent will provide care for animals and facility related equipment in an aquaculture environment. Specific duties include: inspecting and maintaining life support and holding systems; feeding and caring for fin fish and shellfish; making artificial saltwater for use in recirculating fish holding tanks; cleaning floors, counters, monitors, equipment tanks, covers, and piping as needed to meet facility standards; assisting researchers and veterinarian in handling animals, moving, weighing, biopsying and other research techniques; and performing other duties as assigned.

Note: Position requires regular weekend work.

This position requires a High School Diploma or GED and six months in a laboratory animal facility supporting a research project. Experience in aquaculture, animal husbandry, and aquarium maintenance desired. Must have the ability to lift and transport aquacultural supplies, tools and equipment as well as climb and perform extensive standing and walking. Experience with plumbing and carpentry a plus.

Note: Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Salary is for this position is Pay Range 6 (starting at $30,962) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program.  This is full-time contractual position and includes some university benefits.
