Title: Microbiomes in health and disease: from wild salamanders to ex situ wolves to coffee soil

Speaker: Dr. Carly Muletz Wolz (Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute)

Host: Dr. Helen Dooley

Abstract: Carly R. Muletz Wolz, PhD is a Molecular Ecologist in the Center for Conservation Genomics at the Smithsonian National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute. She takes a holistic view of plants and animals by considering their genes, their microbiomes, and their environment with the goal to improve organismal and ecosystem health. Muletz Wolz’s main focus of research has been in the amphibian-chytrid disease system, but in recent years she has expanded her research into examining gut and milk microbiomes of ex situ mammalian populations and also coffee plant microbiomes. In her talk, she will share how she identifies putatively beneficial microbes and the mechanisms by which these microbes may prevent disease in a wide variety of hosts.
