Title: Mark-recapture and biogeochemistry reveal new insights into blue crab ecology and fisheries

Speaker: Dr. Matthew Ogburn (Smithsonian Environmental Research Center)

Host: Dr. Allison Tracy

Abstract: Despite decades of ground-breaking research on blue crab ecology and fisheries, sustainable fisheries management remains an elusive goal for this iconic Chesapeake Bay species. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s Fisheries Conservation Lab, led by Dr. Matt Ogburn, uses techniques ranging from mark-recapture experiments to carapace biogeochemistry to uncover new insights into blue crab ecology and fisheries. This seminar will focus on recent studies exploring the magnitude of recreational crab harvests, spatial variation in fishery exploitation, sperm limitation, and the female crab spawning migration.
