Title: Global Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (Global-ONCE) – A new UN Decade Program in Ocean Science

Abstract: In this seminar, Dr. Jiao will introduce the Global-ONCE program and seek collaborations with scientists at UMCES. Global-ONCE was approved by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the framework of the UN Decade Actions of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the UN Decade Initiative Plan. The Global ONCE started officially on the World Oceans Day of June 8 th 2022 and will last for 10 years. Dr. Jiao is the co-chair of the Global-ONCE program. The objectives of Global-ONCE are to provide the data, knowledge, opportunities, and practices to enable society to evaluate ocean negative carbon emission approaches for the mitigation of climate change. Currently, 36 international institutions have committed to joining Global-ONCE.
