Apply for the IMET Summer Internship
Marine and environmental sciences are crucial for the future of human health, food, water and energy. The nine-week internship connects you to a hands-on research project. Interns will receive an orientation to working in a lab, seminars on molecular techniques relevant to fisheries, aquaculture, energy production, and environmental research. Group activities will promote science communication, professional and life skill development.
This program is open to students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in marine and environmental sciences. IMET has over twenty years of experience mentoring a diverse cohort of undergraduate interns in this program. We are proud of our over 200 internship alumni, many of whom have gone on to earn an M.S. or Ph.D.
We hope to have in-person internships at IMET’s laboratories at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD this summer. However, if COVID-19 restrictions prevent us from hosting in-person interns in the summer of 2021, we will offer a virtual internship focused on data processing, analysis, and communication. In 2020, interns completed projects virtually, learning bioinformatics and basic programming for data analysis. We expect to know whether the program will be in-person or virtual by May 1, 2021.
Internship Benefits: The internship includes a wage of $13.50 per hour for a 40-hour week.
- In-person program: Accommodations at UMBC will be available for those from outside of the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. MTA passes will be provided for local travel in the Baltimore area.
- Virtual program: A laptop and software will be provided.
Internship Eligibility: The internship is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled as undergraduates in fields related to biological sciences and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
