IMET Fall Lecture Series

Title: "Can sharks help us cure human disease?"

Speaker: Dr. Helen Dooley, University of Maryland Baltimore

Sharks have long been portrayed as predatory killers with a fondness for snacking on unsuspecting humans, but what if these amazing animals could actually help us fight infections, autoimmune diseases, or cancer? My team studies how sharks and their relatives protect themselves from infection. We then use this information to understand how the immune system works, and why it goes wrong in different human diseases. This talk will be a gentle introduction to the wonderful world of shark immunology!
