Title: Characterizing natural and anthropogenic organic matter - A Journey from the Ocean to our local Streams

Speaker: Dr. Michael Gonsior (UMCES-CBL)

Host: Dr. Feng Chen

Abstract: The sources and sinks of natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the deep ocean remain obscured and linking the molecular composition of DOM to specific sources is needed to guide the discovery of specific tracers within the DOM pool to better constrain DOM reactivity and turnover. Currently, we have no real measures of the overall reactivity of marine DOM, beside its radiocarbon age and bulk concentrations. Radiocarbon age is likely biased due to additional radiocarbon-free sources in the deep ocean. This seminar will focus on linking sources (e.g., algae) to the observed DOM composition. Similarly, anthropogenic xenobiotics are extremely diverse and the discovery of tracers for anthropogenic contaminants is necessary. This seminar will highlight a few aspects of non-target screening to discover new disinfection by-products as well as tools to trace wastewaters.
