IMET Minute: Growing a more sustainable future

Learn more about algae with IMET graduate student Kia Ramarui. The algae Kia is studying is special because it has the ability to produce large amounts of antioxidants. When under stress the algae produces large amounts astaxanthin, a bright red antioxidant. Astaxanthin is great for nutrition and is a wonderful natural pigment. Its uses range from cosmetics to aquaculture feed to supplements. As our populations continue to grow we need to look into alternative sources of nutrients for our people, crops, livestock and aquaculture. Algae could be this sustainable solution.
