Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative Facility

Image:

The Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative Facility was constructed in 2020 at Mote's Aquaculture Research Park (MAP) located in Sarasota, FL. The 25,000-square-foot facility uses over 150,000 gallons of treated and recirculated seawater stored in large holding areas for research raceway tanks and 5-foot and 10-foot mesocosms. Each lab is equipped with 12 experimental tanks, filtration systems, and water quality monitoring, and can be customized based on project needs. A culture lab and grow room were constructed to produce large amounts of Karenia brevis for mitigation testing, and future capabilities of the lab will include other harmful algal blooms for US HAB-CTI projects. Ample lab, benchtop, and office space is available for visiting scientists, as well as a staffed ecotoxicology lab that can provide toxin analyses upon request.

Lab Fee

$2000.00/lab for first week plus $500.00 per additional week.

Includes entire lab (12 tanks), filtration, seawater, RO, and wear and tear on common spaces and overall facilities (pumps, filters, utilities); water quality monitoring; preparation, maintenance, and cleanup of lab space; use of the chemistry lab, including glassware, fridge/freezer, balances, pipettes, sampling tubes, etc.; wear and tear on common use supplies and equipment, including microscopes, fume hoods, YSIs and spectrophotometer; and workspace, including computers, printer, and equipment storage. (The chemistry lab fee is included with mesocosm or raceway rental)

Chemistry Lab Fee
$50/day/person
Includes benchtop space in the chemistry lab; use of glassware, fridge/freezer, balances, pipettes, etc.; wear and tear on common use supplies and equipment, including microscopes, fume hoods, YSIs and spectrophotometer; and workspace, including computers, printer, and equipment storage.

Culture Fee

$525.00/ 1 x 109 (billion) cells of K. brevis.

Includes prep time for ramp-up of culture, cost of media ingredients, wear and tear on supplies and equipment, and final cell counts on project start date. Mote has 4 strains of K. brevis. Please contact Initiative staff to discuss differences in strains. (This value is based on large scale production of K. brevis).

$50.00/Liter of Culture
Includes prep time for ramp-up of culture, cost of media ingredients, wear and tear on supplies and equipment, and final cell counts on project start date. Current species for small culture requests (<18 L) includes Alexandrium monilatum, Microcystis aeruginosa strain LE3, and Karenia brevis.

$125.00/L1 Media
Includes 12 Liters of prepared L1 media.

Ecotoxicology Fee

$175/sample for water samples

$185/sample for sediment and flocculent samples

$195 for tissue samples

Includes extracting, processing and HPLC-MS analysis of samples received from a study. Cost reductions are available if the samples are received in vials ready for HPLC analysis, on a per study basis. Additional costs will be required when Ecotox staff are involved in design, implementation and collection of samples for a study, on a per study basis.

Additional Fees

Depending on scope of work, additional fees may apply. Items that may warrant additional fees include animal husbandry, specialized equipment, water quality analyses, chemistry analyses, toxin analyses, etc. Scope of work should be discussed with staff in advance.
